When I set out to buy my first home in early 2000, I had a modest budget and a modest vision. As a professional green builder, I planned to buy a fixer-upper and renovate as green as possible. But when my realtor brought me to a large, mixed-use two building property on the edge of West Oakland, my vision expanded.
